Kempt: The Strongest Liquor on Earth Comes to America.

The drink itself is pot-distilled from potatoes, sugar and yeast, which means the closest American equivalent is moonshine—but even that’s not terribly close, given the strength of the spirits involved.” Oh no - I’ve had moonshine. I’ll pass.

I had a swig of moonshine as a 15 year old. I still remember it as something akin to industrial waste. Ugh. I’ve been told that it is strange that I like single mail Scotch but I see no comparison.

I agree. No comparison. Moonshine and/or grain alcohol pave the road to death by spirits, IMHO.

In one of the pubs where I tended bar, we always had a secret bottle behind the bar. Only a handful of regulars knew it was there. It actually didn’t tast bad. American moonshine tastes so raw and harsh; this tasted less toxic somehow. It would blow the top of your head clear off, though. Make no mistake.

It was always made and sold by widows. If you lost your husband, you were allowed to set up a still to support yourself.

Or a “still,” I should say.
