Centuries-old torture devices to be sold in New York. “Ettinger said the collection was exhibited in Britain and the United States in the late 19th century. It was eventually bought by a Norwegian Holocaust survivor living in the United States in the 1950s and is now being sold by heirs.” My italics. In the spectrum of responses to experiencing torture firsthand, I can easily envision curiousity about the historical depths of human depravity as one response.

Perhaps not so much curiosity as… intellectualization? Perhaps trying to understand an intractable emotional situation by intense study and application of analysis, logic and reason. Somewhat fetishistic… which, too, is an understandable response to the incomprehensible.
