The Stranger:

The Art of Dying.  Please ... bury that bad HDR job on the lead-in photo, without a grave marker.  I know quick HDR’s become a ‘style’, but it is no different than using the watercolor filter in Photoshop.  Whereas the watercolor filter grew and died as a fad in months, bad HDR seems to be sticking around for longer.  I’m sad to see it spread into the mass media.

Skilled HDR is done so well, you’d almost never notice the difference.  It is commonly used to replace costly on-site lighting. We’re used to seeing well-lit subjects (dare I say ‘properly lit’?) in commercial photography, so a lot of excellent HDR work is passing by unnoticed.  Bad HDR is being routinely used to dress up mundane photography.  Akin to the concept of, “Well, if the photo didn’t work in color, it’ll get more drama if I drop it to black and white and hike the contrast ...”

As any volume-producing digital photographer knows, get it right in the camera.  Post-production consumes profit like a black hole consumes galaxies.
